Hot honey barbecue ribs! This spare ribs recipe is tossed with a simple spice blend, baked in the oven and then brushed with homemade hot honey barbecue sauce. Place it on the grill after for a more smoky, spicy and caramelized finish.
Preparing the spice rub. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. In a small bowl, mix together the light brown sugar, smoked paprika, kosher salt, black pepper, mustard powder, and onion powder to create the spice rub.
Seasoning the ribs. Place the cleaned pork spareribs on a large sheet of aluminum foil. Drizzle a little neutral oil over the ribs (both sides), ensuring they are lightly coated. Sprinkle the prepared spice rub generously over both sides of the ribs. Wrap the ribs tightly in the aluminum foil to be completely sealed.
Baking the ribs. Place the wrapped ribs on a baking sheet and transfer them to the preheated oven to make your oven-baked ribs. Bake the ribs for 2 to 2.5 hours. Go for 2 hours if you want them less tender (don't worry, still very tender), and 2.5 hours if you want them more fall off the bone tender!
Make your hot honey barbecue sauce. In a medium saucepan, combine the ketchup, hot sauce, honey, light brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, and soy sauce. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Cook the sauce over medium-low heat, stirring continuously for 10-15 minutes, or until the sauce thickens just a tad and darkens in color. Let it continue to go on low for another 5-10 minutes. Set aside until ready to brush over the ribs.
Grilling the ribs. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. Carefully remove the baked ribs from the aluminum foil and place them on a tray or cutting board. Brush the bbq sauce generously over both sides of the ribs. Grill the sauced ribs for 4-5 minutes on each side, occasionally brushing with more barbecue sauce to your liking, until they are nicely charred and caramelized.
Serve! Once the ribs are done grilling, transfer them to a cutting board to rest for 7-10 minutes. Then slice each rib with a knife and serve with more barbecue sauce and pickles on the side!
