Caramelized Onion Rolls

Caramelized Onion Rolls

Caramelized Onion Rolls

This caramelized onion rolls recipe is absolutely delicious, and SO easy! It comes together in no time, is cheesy and SO dreamy! This recipe is majorly inspired by french onion soup with gruyere cheese and dreamy caramelized onions cooked in wine.

Baked on herby buttered sweet rolls (because obviously) and placed in the oven ’til melty perfection. This recipe is SO easy and is so tasty!

Caramelized Onion Rolls

What ingredients do you need for these caramelized onion rolls?

Sweet rolls: We are using store bought sweet rolls, cut horizontally and then stuffed, melted and then pulled apart. YUM.

For your caramelized onions: We are using olive oil, onions, butter and reducing down with red wine and balsamic vinegar.

For the cheese: We are using comte (or gruyere works, too!) and sharp cheddar cheese.

Finishing off with herbs like thyme and parsley!

We are also using butter to toast the top buns of the rolls, and you can alternatively use an egg wash as well for browning too.

Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions to make this recipe

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

Make your caramelized onions

In a pan or cast iron large skillet, heat up a drizzle of olive oil. Add in your thinly sliced onions and season with salt. Let that sweat out and caramelize a bit on medium heat to medium-high heat for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

About halfway through your onions, add in your balsamic vinegar, 2 tablespoons butter and red wine and reduce that down to finish caramelizing, about another 15-20 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Set aside.

Cut your rolls

Take your rolls and cut them lengthwise so you have 2 slices (top and bottom) Place in an oven-safe prepared pan to fit the rolls.

Make your butter topping

Make your butter topping sauce and melt your remaining 2 tablespoons butter in a pot or microwave. Toss in chopped thyme and parsley.

Assemble and bake!

Brush your butter mixture on the bottom buns. Then, add on your caramelized onions on top, then top with your shredded cheese and finish with a sprinkle of fresh thyme. Cover with the top buns.

Take a brush and brush over your melted butter and herb mixture on the top bun of the rolls.

Bake for 15 to 20 minutes until the butter has melted, the buns are toasted, golden brown and the cheese has melted. Remove and serve!
